30.11.2007 г. | Cancer is the second biggest killer in Germany
After cardiovascular diseases, cancer is the second biggest killer in Germany. As the age of the population increases, the number of cancer patients has increased proportionally. Approximately 183,000 men and 175,000 women were diagnosed with cancer in 2000. Among the estimated number of newly diagnosed cancer patients, prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women are the most frequent cancers.
According to the latest estimates, the number of women diagnosed with cancer decreased by 1.7 per cent compared to 1998. The number of men diagnosed with cancer in 2000, however, increased by 7.4 percent. These and additional figures can be found in the paper “Krebs in Deutschland”, published by the Working Group Population-Related Cancer Registers (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bevölkerungsbezogener Krebsregister) in cooperation with the Robert Koch Institute.Among the estimated number of newly diagnosed cancer patients, prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women are the most frequent cancers, followed by colorectal cancer in both men and women. Lung cancer is the third most frequent form of cancer, both in women and men. The number of newly diagnosed lung cancer cases is decreasing in men; however, the number is increasing in women through altered smoking behaviour.
Cancer experts have taken up the fight against this deadly disease with improved methods in surgery and chemo- and radiation therapy, improved early diagnosis and new anti-cancer drugs. In addition, information about risk factors and preventive strategies are of great importantance. Of avoidable risks, smoking accounts for 25 to 30 per cent of all cancer fatalities. Approximately 90 percent of all lung cancers are caused through smoking.
In Germany, Baden-Württemberg is one of the leading areas in cancer research, with cutting edge research carried out at the universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen and Ulm and the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg.
