Information about Germany

Germany is situated in the center of Europe and borders on nine countries (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czech republic, Poland and Denmark).

The territory of the country occupies 357 000 meters, the longest extension is from south till north (876km), from west till east is 640 km. The Population of Germany is about 82,5 million people. There are four main areas in German landscape: Northern and Baltic coast, Northern German lowland, Middle German Mountains, Alps foothills with Bavarian Alps the highest hill of Germany is Zugschpitze, its altitude is 2962 meters.
 Climate in Germany:
It is moderate mild. Germany is situated between areas of mild climate of Atlantic Ocean and continental climate on the east. Big temperature fluctuation is rare. Average temperature in winter varies from +1,5 C in the lowland to – 6 C in mountains.
Middle temperatures in July are +18C in the lowlands and +20C in the south valleys. Rains are 50-80mm a month; it is raining in all seasons.
Religion:
29,5 million people are Protestants, 28 million are Catholics, 40 000 are Jews, 1,7 million are Muslims.
Political structure:
Federal multi-party system of Parliament type with two Legislative organs: Bundesrat (Lands Representatives are in it) and Bundestag (Parliament).

Banks:
They are open on Friday from 9.00 am till 1.00 pm and from 2.30 pm till 5.30 pm, some of them on Thursday till 6.00. ATMs are accepting as a rule EC (electronic cash) and credit cards as Vida, MasterCard.
Telephone:
You need to dial 8-10-49 and city code in order to talk to somebody from Germany. If you calling from Germany to Russia please dial 007 then city code and phone number. Reduced tariff for local talks in Germany from 6.00 pm till 8.00 am. Public phones are accepting phone cards that you can buy in the post office or in the newspaper shops. Some phone cards are accepting coins. In Russian shops in German towns you can buy SIM cards for cell phones to talk cheaper with people from Russia and Ukraine (from 9 Eurocents for a minute).
Cuisine:
Traditional German dish is pork legs with stewed cabbage. Every land is offering its own cuisine traditions: weisswurst- white calf sausages with sweat mustard. Weissbier- Bavarian light bier. Schweinenbraten – fried pork with dumplings; Tafelspits- roast beef and Wiener Schnizel – calf cutlets with apple fritters. Vegetarians can try Kasespatzle – fatty noodles with cheese and pieces of onion. “Strudel” is a traditional sweat dish; it is an apple pie (though Austrians argue that this dish belongs to German cuisine).
Germany is the bier country. There are lots of types and trademarks of it that are very tasty and have high quality.
 
 
Souvenirs.
Traditional bier mugs, Berlin teddy bears, “air of Berlin” in the can, or the piece of Berlin wall, Bavarian Vopertinger - stuffed animal with geese’ paws, hair’s head, heron’s nose, eagle owl’s body.
Shops:
One of the most pleasant reasons of visiting Germany is shopping. You will find yourself in the wonderful world of abundance. Speaking about the prices they mainly depend upon the shop, the bigger the shop, the cheaper the goods.
The majority of shops are working as a rule from 9.00 am till 8.00 pm. They are closed on Sunday and in the days of national, religious and local holidays. VAT is included in the cost of goods, you can return part of it (10% of the goods’ cost) if you make TAX-FREE cheque in the shop. To get this cheque you will have to show our cheques and exported goods at customs and then in the payment desk TAX-FREE that is as a rule not far from the customs.
International airports:
In Leipzig, Dresden, Bremen, Koln, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich, Nurdberg, Saabruken, Stuttgart.
Customs:
It is prohibited to import to Switzerland the following: the weapon, drugs, literature that undermines constitutional system of Germany, fake goods more than for the personal needs.
 
In accordance with the Washington agreement of the rare animal protection that Germany joined in 1976 it is prohibited to import and export ivory,
skins and goods of cheetah, crocodile.
 
There are some prohibitions concerning nutrition products import. For example you can import caviar only if conserving agents    permitted in Germany were used in its production.
 
 The currency of any country you can import without limitations. It is prohibited to import works of Art, antiquity, icons without correspondent allowance paper. In accordance with the customs’ rules antiquity is the goods which age is more than 100 years that’s why when importing the antiquity it is necessary to have the document indicating the age of the antiquity.
 
You can import duty-free the goods for the personal usage only. This item stipulates that the goods would be exported back i.e. they must not be used for the exchange, sale or other commercial purposes.
 
 
Some goods are allowed to export tax free only in certain quantity:
1. Tabacco goods-200 pics (1 cigarette set).
2. Alcohol beverages ( for people after 17)- 1 liter of hard beverages containing more than 22% alcohol or 2 liters of hard beverages containing less than 22% or 2 liters of wine.
3. Coffee – 500 gr.
4. Petrol- full tank+10 liters in canister.
You should pay attention that these restrictions are spread to the mentioned above goods bought in duty-free shops.
If the good mentioned above and imported in quantities more than permitted amounts, they will be taxed. If you are importing domestic animals (cats, dogs), it is necessary to show the veterinary certificate where the inoculation against hydrophobia is indicated. This inscription should be translated in German.
Holidays:
Many shops, banks, parks, theaters, and other institutions are closed on holidays or they are closing earlier the usual closing time.

4. The car trips: you can rent a car of any kind Europcar or Sixt. The cost depends upon the type of car and the time of renting. To rent the car you must show your driving license and your credit card to prove your ability to pay and the amount from 500 to 1000 Euro is being blocked on your account depending upon the type of car.

6. Currency exchange can be carried out in almost any bank. The bank commission depends upon the bank itself and the currency.
7. In the center of Munich there is an agency that can take the cash from your credit card without the pin code.
8. Tips: In restaurants it is accepted to leave the tips upon your wish. Usually it is 10% from the total amount.
